UserMetrics goes to the doctors

As a major part of the National Health Service’s drive towards evidence-based medicine, the National Library for Health have created a portal to give all patient-facing staff access to the various databases containing data on clinical issues.

The portal is a powerful but quite sophisticated tool, so the NLH decided to conduct a usability test with clinicians, NHS Librarians and Hospital Knowledge Managers as soon as the first iteration of the portal was up and running. Because of the highly specialised nature of the content, designing the research was a complex collaborative exercise. But the real challenge was to get vital and very busy medical staff to take time out to come into our usability lab.

The solution was for us to go to hospital. We took all the hardware out of our lab and set it up in a room in the new University Hospital in Coventry. That way medics could come to the lab without disrupting their work too much and we were able to provide valuable feedback to NLH for the next iteration of the search portal.
